ਮੂਲ deal ਜਿਸ ’ਚ 6 ਹੋਰ Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft ਖਰੀਦਣੇ ਸਨ, US State Department ਨੇ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ $2.42 billion ਲਈ approve ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਇਸਦੀ price supply chain disruptions, inflation, ਅਤੇ Trump ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਗਾਏ tariffs ਕਰਕੇ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਵੱਧ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
Defence sources ਦੇ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ, project ਦੀ price ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰੀਬ 50% ਦਾ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਹੈ August ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ’ਚ Trump ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਗਾਏ 25% tariffs, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ aircraft ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ parts ਅਤੇ components ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਇਹ ਵਾਧੂ cost Boeing ਨੇ buyers ਨੂੰ (ਇਸ case ਵਿੱਚ Indian government) ਪਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਕਈ reports ਦੱਸਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ Ministry of Defence ਨੇ acquisition ’ਤੇ pause ਲਾ ਕੇ strategic reassessment ਕਰਨ ਦਾ decision ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। Rising costs, geopolitical dynamics, ਅਤੇ strategic autonomy ਵਰਗੇ factors ਆਖਰੀ decision ਵਿੱਚ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਣਗੇ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, Indian government ਨੇ deal ਜਾਂ ਇਸਦੇ suspension ਬਾਰੇ ਕੋਈ official confirmation ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

Air India Boeing retrofitting
ਇਹ developments ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਆਇਆ ਜਦੋਂ Air India ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ legacy Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners ਨੂੰ retrofitting ਲਈ US ਭੇਜਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ। PTI sources ਮੁਤਾਬਕ, ਪਹਿਲਾ revamped jet ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਤੱਕ fleet ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਹੈ।
Air India ਕੋਲ ਕੁੱਲ 33 Dreamliners ਹਨ — 26 legacy Boeing 787-8s ਅਤੇ 7 Boeing 787-9s। ਪਹਿਲਾ legacy Dreamliner US Boeing facility ਵਿੱਚ retrofit ਲਈ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ certification processes ਹੋਣਗੀਆਂ। Retrofit ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, airline ਦਾ ਟੀਚਾ ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ 2 legacy Dreamliners ਨੂੰ retrofitting ਲਈ ਭੇਜਣ ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ retrofitted planes ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿੰਨ-class configuration ਹੋਵੇਗੀ — 20 Business Class seats, 25 Premium Economy seats ਅਤੇ 205 Economy class seats।
